Mark Cole
Mark, I have known you all your life,
but never sat down with you and talked.
I do know that you are very loved
by your mother, sisters and greg,
they will never forget you.
God bless you and keep you .

WHY WE DON'T DIE
In late September many voices
Tell you you will die.
That leaf says it. That coolness.
All of them are right.
Our many souls -- what
Can they do about it?
Nothing. They're already
Part of the invisible.
Our souls have been
Longing to go home
Anyway. "It's late," they say.
"Lock the door, let's go."
The body doesn't agree. It says,
"We buried a little iron
Ball under that tree.
Let's go get it."

FIRST RAIN AFTER DROUGHT
1.
There is peace among the reflections of trees, skimming the hoods of passing automobiles; as if
over water, as if in flight among the concave skies.
Peace also in the pebbles of rain tumbling off the roofs of sleek black cars, streaming downward in all directions at once. The rain is searching for its purpose on the ground, feeling its way among the hard edges of things.
2.
Were it possible for silence to have an echo, this night would come forth to speak, saying "the silence
does not repeat itself, it is continually new like the rain." Which is why I lie awake tonight and have no idea how to respond.
3.
Brother, should I question now the beauty of the rain, as it falls tonight for the first time on your grave? The undersides of the earth are chill-damp and silent, and the rain insinuates itself like breath, until every dark corridor expands in recognition. Forgive me for loving the rain. It is not breath, but it does what it can. My speech is filled with the rain. How can I abandon it now and still expect to reach you?

If the Cole family finds my message, I would like an address so that I may send a card.
