Daniel J. Shaw Obituary

Daniel J. Shaw "was just a big goofball," said his sister, Angela Hinterberger, "and that's what we loved him for. He was a very outgoing guy. He was just a guy who wanted to help people. He was big, spiritwise, and he loved to play practical jokes on my mother. The last time we talked, we were planning the next one." Shaw, 23, of West Seneca, N.Y., was killed Nov. 5 in Taji when he was hit by an explosion in Taji. He was assigned to Fort Carson. Shaw earned a Purple Heart after an insurgent rocket attack left him with shrapnel in the back of his head. Whether it was dressing up as Santa Claus when he worked at Delta Sonic, or wearing his hair in a mohawk and joshing with then-principal James K. Brotz, Shaw was known for his good nature. "He was very determined that he wanted to go into the military, and he worked very hard to get there," Brotz said. Shaw's can-do attitude that served him well in the military, said former teacher Ray Wassinger. "I see so many kids in high school that, when they hit the road blocks, they give up, take another road. Dan wasn't going to do that," he said. He is survived by his parents, Ronald and Brenda.

Danny,
It has been a year ago today that we said our final goodbyes. I can't believe it's been a year. I think of you so often, your silliness and your caring smile. You were like a little brother to me in every sense of the word! We fought like siblings, we teased like siblings and we took care of each other like siblings. I'm saddened by the fact that I won't get to see you again on earth but look forward to giving you a big hug in heaven!

To The Shaw Family,
I love you all as if you were my own this has been a tough year but with love and support you will find some healing. I will always be here for you and am so gretful that I was able to take part in Danny's benefit it was a huge success and Dan would have been proud! Take care of youselves and may you find comfort.

Been driving past the spot where you got hit a lot lately, the picture of you from the paper keeps comming to mind. Wish it didn't. Hell I wish there never was a reason for them to have to print that picture. They filled in the hole from the blast and I hope that your family is healing. If your watching over me man, you are doing a pretty good job. I aint been hit yet this time. You're missed brother.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Daniel, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I was so saddened when i heard the news of danny. I grew up on washington st with him from kindergarten until he moved. We had the best times together, from snowball fights, to building tree forts, watching indiana jones, going on his skating ramp...memories are endless. He was one of the funnest people to be around.ever since i meet him all he talked about was wanting to be in the army.usually we would end up playing army and he always wanted to capture me, seeing the delight of him playing, i know how happy he must have been to grow up and fufill his dream.A true hero in my eyes. i love you danny and the whole shaw family.my family and i have danny's picture and pray for your family whenever we look at it.I am extremly privaleged to have known him.

Dear Ron, Brenda, Angela, Ronnie and to the Shaw and Busshart Families,

There are not enough words to express just how much I share in your pain with the loss of Daniel. Not a day has passed since the news of his passing that I have not prayed for you all and in my quiet moments I have cried for the loss of your son, a great American Hero. Attending the service for Daniel saddened me deeply, I cried for you and your family. He will be sadly missed.
Listening to the stories about Daniel made me so very proud of him for all his accomplishments in the short time he was with us. Keep his memories close to help you through the days ahead. Know you are not alone, most of all, be proud of the difference Daniel had made in this world.

I salute Sgt. Daniel J. Shaw for taking a stand to protect our freedom, keeping our homeland safe. I Thank you for raising such a heroic, very courageous and most Honorable young man. Daniel will forever be in my thoughts and his devotion to our country will never be forgotten. You and your family will forever be in my heart, my thoughts and prayers. May God give you the strength to ease your pain from sorrow in the days to come.

Each time I seen the lights flickering at the funeral home and then at the brunch, Daniel was in my thoughts. For me it was a sign that he was there smiling down at us and loved the support of his loved ones and the community who were there to Honor him and to help his family through this time of grief. That he had gotten his wings and that was his way of letting us know he is okay that he is at peace and with our Lord.

May God Bless you all to help you heal.

I was lucky enough to meet him when he was a teen and hung out at my sisters on Bellwood Ave. He hung out with my nephew and brought so much laughter and kindness to everyone around him. We all grew to love him very quickly. The world was lucky to have him though even for such a short time..but his memories, kindness and love will last forever in our hearts.

I've known Dan since he was what 13 years old? Great kid who went on to be a great man. Never could frown with him around, even if we were both in rotten moods. He grew to be a man of conviction who followed his heart, and that's why I've always been proud of him. Abraham Linclon once said that that " the better part of one's life consists of their friendships" in that Dan has had a magnificent go and my own life is better because I was blessed enough to call him a friend. He will be missed.

I grew up two houses down from Dan. Even though I only lived in the neighborhood until 4th grade, we still kept in touch throughout the years in West Seneca schools and the Auto Body class at Potter Road. I was reading my old diary the other day; it talks about all of the random things we would do
as kids, like playing cops and robbers or even one day where we spent an entire day trying to break a tree branch in his backyard. I remember how much he wanted to be in the military and how big his heart was for serving
our country.
Of course, I can't forget the many times I got stuck playing army with him, but no matter what we were doing we always had so much fun.

I can still hear what his voice sounds like, and the exact way he would say hello to me every time we bumped into each other, I can't even describe it. He was so polite and friendly, everything would just fall back into place. It was like we had that childhood bond from so long ago, that would be
unbreakable no matter how distant friends become.

My heart goes out to the Shaw family, one of the nicest families that I have had the privilege to know. I'll miss you Dan, you worked hard to follow your dreams, I know you loved what you were doing.

Please know that your son will never be forgotton. I am a veteran and spoke at the Eternal Light Monument in New York City today for Veterans Day. I read of your son's passing yesterday, and asked for a moment of silence from thousands of veterans, as well as active duty military. Your son was in my thoughts and thiers. I didn't have to know him to know that he is our hero as well as yours. Truely yours, A Buffalonian.
