DOBSON - Mr. Clifford O. Scott passed peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Scott was born March 20, 1922, in the Salem Fork community, the son of Arvil and Nora Scott. On Aug. 19, 1944, he married Frances Gillespie Scott, and together they were a vital part of the Dobson community for over 61 years. Mr. Scott was involved in many organizations throughout his life. He was a member of Dobson First Baptist Church and served in several leadership roles. Singing in the church choir for 52 years, Mr. Scott also served as deacon, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and was a trustee. He also served two terms as moderator of the Surry Baptist Association, was chairman of the North Carolina Mother's Day offering committee at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and was appointed to the Baptist State Board in Raleigh. Other positions held by Mr. Scott include former trustee of Northern Hospital of Surry, chairman of Surry County Bonding and Pollution Control Committee and Northwest Economic Development Committee. He was currently serving his second term as trustee of Surry Community College. Mr. Scott also served as Dobson Postmaster for a number of years and was a past master of Copeland Masonic Lodge, having been a member for 62 years. Owner of Clifford O. Scott Life Insurance Agency in Dobson, Mr. Scott was designated Man of the Year 11 times by Occidental Life Insurance Co. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Frances Gillespie Scott of the home. Mr. Scott also has two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Jean Scott of Lubbock, Texas, and Ross and Jennifer Scott of Dobson; and two daughters and sons-in-law, Anna and David Smith and Angie and Chuck Graham of Dobson; seven grandchildren, Matt and wife Jessica Scott of Kernersville, Jillian and Jenny Alyn Scott of Dobson, Eric and Kelly Scott of Lubbock and Chase and Carter Graham of Dobson; a great-grandchild, Eli Scott of Kernersville; five sisters, Lois Nixon, Veva Martin, Oleen (Grover) Haymore, Foy Moser and Kay Gardner; three sisters-in-law, Nell Scott, Dorothy Scott and Enkie Scott; and many special nieces and nephews. Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Imogene Scott; and four brothers, Rex, Dean, Graham and Jackie Scott. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Dobson First Baptist Church, with Claxton Hall and Michael Macon officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today, May 2, at Dobson First Baptist Church Fellowship Center. Main St., Dobson, NC 27017.
